The Brunswick 15
On September 9, 1964 fifteen African American students embarked on a monumental journey as they desegregated Brunswick High School in Lawrenceville, Virginia.
While 38 students were designated to integrate the Brunswick County schools, Carolyn Burwell, Elvertha Cox, Vernal Cox, Barbara Evans, Sandra Goldman, Marvin Jones, Beatrice Malone, Queen Marks, Cecilia Mason, Yvonne Stewart, Florence Stith, Rosa Stith, Ashton Thurman, India Walker, and Joyce Walker became civil rights pioneers by becoming the first African American teens to desegregate the all-white High School. These trailblazers were later named The Brunswick 15.
June 10, 1966, Marvin Jones, Florence Stith, India Walker, and Joyce Walker were the first African Americans to graduate from Brunswick High School.
